Kolm veebiloengut itaalia keele murretest keeleteadlaselt Giuliano Gajetti. Tutvutakse Itaalia piirkondlike keelte eripäradega, tänapäeva standarditaalia keele kujunemislooga ning keelte arengut mõjutanud poliitiliste, sotsiaalsete ja kultuuriliste teguritega. Loengud toimuvad inglise keeles.

This three-lesson course introduces students to the major local languages of Italy, highlighting their historical development, structural features, and cultural significance. From a sociolinguistic point of view, these local languages can be seen as “dialects” of Italian, but on the other hand they can also be considered part of the broader Romance language continuum, shaped by centuries of political, social, and cultural change.

Lesson 1

Northern Italy as a linguistic crossroads between Italy and the rest of Romance Europe, characterized by Gallo-Italic languages and strong historical autonomy. Case studies: Piedmontese: between French and Italian influence; Lombard: internal diversity and language continuum; Venetian: conservatism and historical prestige.

Lesson 2

Central Italy as the linguistic heart of the peninsula and the birthplace of Standard Italian. The political and cultural role of Florence and Rome. Florentine Tuscan as the basis of Standard Italian. Literary prestige (Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio).

Lesson 3

Southern Italy as a linguistically rich area shaped by Mediterranean contacts and long-term multilingualism. Long-lasting separation from Northern and Central Italy. Case studies: Neapolitan: cultural presence in music, theatre, and cinema; Sicilian: one of the earliest Romance literary traditions.
